SAN CLEMENTE
Dir. Raymond Depardon, 1980

In 1980, Raymond Depardon visited San Clemente, a psychiatric clinic situated on an island in the Venice lagoon, he had been to previously to shoot a series of photos. This time he brought his movie camera. Over ten days, he filmed daily life within the asylum shortly before it was closed down and created a unique piece of cinema, a reference point in the field of documentaries, which offers us an insight into a world that is normally closed to us. As a filmmaker, Depardon’s usual method of disappearing like a chameleon in the landscape doesn’t work here. He and his camera become an active part of the film as the inmates meet him with either aggression or indifference. Through long takes and without explanatory commentary, SAN CLEMENTE shows the preparations for life in freedom from the patients’ perspective.

So much so that, one summer's evening, the director invites all the patients into the hospital grounds and suggests they knock down the wall that separates the city from the mental hospital. Everything has to take place in one night to avoid bureaucratic obstacles and institutional reactions. In May 1978, Law 180 came into force, which effectively abolished the mental asylum institution in Italy. The main protagonist of this law was the psychiatrist Franco Basaglia, who in 1968, 10 years before the law, was interviewed by Sergio Zavoli on Tv7 in the report "I giardini di Abele". This precious filmed document from the Rai archive shows the interior of the mental asylum in Gorizia, collecting the testimony of Basaglia and his patients.
